The two-cylinder engines of the 01 series are considered to be the first express locomotives built according to the standard construction program were created. The first batches were equipped with leading wheels with a diameter of 800 mm and were approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102 onwards, leading wheels of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, which meant that the maximum permitted speed could be increased to 130 km/h.
The heyday of the 01 series began with the summer timetable of 1934. The performance achieved in those years was a challenge for the machines and the staff. After the Second World War, this was only achieved again by electric locomotives and large diesel locomotives.
In 1935, Henschel delivered the locomotive 01 161 to the Hanover depot, which served the east-west main line from Hamm to Magdeburg and the north-south main line to Hamburg and Kassel from the center.
