The German Federal Railway began using smaller shunting locomotives to shunt passenger and goods cars at railway stations early on. In 1965, the German company Gmeinder from Baden-Württemberg introduced a further development to existing shunting engines. The Köf 11 and the later Köf 12 (small engine with an oil diesel motor and fluid drive) was able to shunt multiple cars with ease. As the engines proved themselves, more than 600 engines from various construction lots were put into service. Even today, these engines are still used by Deutsche Bahn AG and countless private rail companies.

The model can only be operated to a limited extent with analogue driving devices.
